IUPAT District Council 36 Reveal More Egregious Schiavo Tweets, Including Further Attacks Against UFW Co-Founder, 22 Tweets Calling to #DefundThePolice, Vulgar Language Attacking Dems, Calls for Abolishing Neighborhood Councils, Attacks Against Presidents Biden and Obama
Monterey Park, CA — Today, the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades District Council 36 (IUPAT DC36) responded to a series of tweets from Pilar Schiavo, a candidate for the newly drawn State Assembly District 40, in which the candidate disparaged the co-founder of the United Farm Workers, the Democratic Party, among others. In addition, the IUPAT DC36 made public today a new revelation of additional tweets by Schiavo which include additional attacks against the United Farm Workers Co-Founder, 22 tweets where the candidate calls to #DefundThePolice, vulgar attacks against Democrats, calls for abolishing local Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils, and more.
“It’s one thing to provide constructive criticism to your friends and allies in the Democratic Party and in the labor movement. Nobody is perfect — and oftentimes — constructive feedback is a net positive. That said, it is something entirely different when a candidate for public office repeatedly, again and again, uses scorched-earth tactics on a public social media platform to attack such allies. For example, attacking Dolores Huerta and the late John Lewis is inexcusable, under any circumstances. Period,” said Robert Smith, Political Director for IUPAT DC36.
Smith added, “Furthermore, calling for a #DemExit amounts to creating an alternative to the Democratic Party, which in turn, objectively only helps Republicans, and undoubtedly hurts Democrats and working families who support the Democratic Party’s agenda. Then add on attacks against President Biden and Vice President Harris — who we in labor worked so hard to ensure defeated Donald Trump in 2020 — and combine it with extremist calls for #DefundThePolice, abolishing Neighborhood Councils — and it’s clear the people of the 40th State Assembly District deserve better. For these reasons and many more, this is why the IUPAT DC36 did not endorse Pilar Schiavo for State Assembly. And furthermore, we strongly condemn such egregious remarks by Pilar Schiavo.”
