INGLEWOOD – The Inglewood Unified School District will host a public meeting Monday, Mar. 7, to discuss the pending closure of Warren Lane Elementary School.
The last time the district tried this, the residents fought back and won a one year reprieve, to increase enrollment, which was stymied due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the district holding meeting recommending closure of multiple schools, they took the route of consolidating the Adult School (which is miniscule), and close Warren Lane, which sits in the Morningside Park neighborhood where home sales have topped $1 million.
A member of the Morningside High Alumni Association tipped off the community that the district selected Harridge Developers to build housing on the vacant land at the former Woodworth site, and the empty parcel between them and Morningside.
Harridge Developers were donors to Mayor Butts campaign and were initially awarded the opportunity to build at the old Daniel Freeman Hospital site, until the residents fought back over the amount of planned units.
There has been no public plans made available to the public about what the district plans to do with Warren Lane, however, the City has increased density and appears inevitable that housing will be built there too.
According Assembly Bill 1840, the district will receive $10 million for closing schools, on top of the multi-million dollar bond residents voted for last year, and back when Measure GG passed.
Residents have collectively given Inglewood Unified School District close to $500 million in added property tax assessments, to fix the schools, and we continue to lose 500 students a year, and have below average test scores.
Instead of putting money back into the classroom, they are steering it away from “school repairs” under the guise of cost-savings from the closures.
The District has made it impossible to find details of the Mar. 7 meeting, as there is no post on any of their social media accounts about it, however, we have the details.
The meeting is scheduled for 4pm, instead of 5:30pm like the school board meetings.
Here is the zoom link to attend, and the flyer with the details. https://inglewoodusd.zoom.us/j/88903896806?pwd=QTlFM0lveXBzSnFnczJrZit0ZjBiUT09&fbclid=IwAR1jD-XMNIU9_prwEMIWAv84c-yuODz1uLbJWW0nNqYG7zBjAl9GQcPD1ag#success

Oh lookie is this another trick learned from City Hall? , – Violating the Brown Act, placing extra Important items on “special agendas” at not regular times ? Sorta sounds like she is trying to make sure the public doesn’t find out until the meeting is over doesn’t it? . Does that sound Oh so ”Buttish” ?
What does Murphy’s Bowl have in common with Christmas? (Hint: City Hall was closed). And then there is that Easter Bunny and the Stadium Ballot item comparison !
Shall we ask Ms Torres if she intends to put an end to all the additional school bond fees that appear on our property tax bills since those funds were meant to repair the schools she is selling? Perhaps even give refund to those who live in areas where the elementary schools are projected to be closed….
That she can not improve the quality of education within the walls is no reason for us to continue on the always foolish concept that the walls are why we are losing students.
Shall we consider why selling the properties is unwise ?
If all the high density condo/ apt building takes place as the new zoning encourages and permits developers to do, they will be occupied by people who are likely to have children. Since the schools will be gone we will soon be told the District will need more money to eminent domain remaining many single family homes and then more money will be needed to build new schools for the condo kids.
Ms Torres should contact the competition Charter Schools and ask them to lease the properties she has determined have too few students, and she should figure out how to better teach since clearly learning is not taking place…which is why parents are taking children where they can learn.
Oh wait could it be true, as some believe, that Destruction of the Inglewood Unified School District for the benefit of campaign contributors is why she is here?
Let’s not forget Autumn Burke and Steve Bradford both voted for Assembly Bill 1840 …..Doesn’t that sound like selling our community resources for their campaign donors to ensure their political career?
Let’s get on our phones and tell the Governor, Our County Supervisors, and the CA Senators and CA Assembly members this is NOT ACCEPTABLE and oh yes every news agency you can think of also!
Let’s tell Maxine Waters we don’t appreciate developers being catered to at our expense.
And now Burke is a consultant with Axiom.
