The Compton City Council faces another vacancy with the resignation of one of its members mid-way through their first term.
District 1 Councilwoman Michelle Chambers announced her resignation during the city’s Successor Agency meeting held Mar. 15.
“My resignation will be effective Mar. 17,” said Chambers. “I will continue serving Compton on a wider scale.”
The Wave was able to reach Mayor Emma Sharif who confirmed Chambers resignation but had no comment on the matter.
The council took up a subsequent need item voting to accept Chambers resignation effective Mar. 17.
Chambers was elected in June 2019, after defeating the incumbent.
With over 25 years of public service experience, she announced she is leaving for a new job.
Chambers previously worked for Asm. Mike Gipson’s office as a field representative, and after taking office, she became the Communications/Public Affairs representative for LA County Assessor Jeffrey Prang.
City Attorney Eric Perrodin notified the mayor the council has two ways they can proceed; with either a special election or appointment.
The last three vacancies on the council were filled by appointment, as opposed to a costly special election.
The council will take up the matter once Chambers seat is declared vacant.
