On February 2, 2022, the Inglewood City Council voted to pass a moratorium on new short-term rentals (STRs) in the city. The moratorium comes in response to the tragic killing of four people in at an unregulated Airbnb in January of this year. The Mayor of Inglewood promised to use this moratorium to develop “very strict” STR regulations to protect Inglewood residents.
Inglewood is experiencing rapid economic development centered around the newly renovated Forum and SoFi Stadium. The Superbowl alone brought an estimated 150,000 visitors to Inglewood, and more will continue to visit during upcoming events, including the Olympics.
As Inglewood becomes a tourism and event destination, it must balance attracting visitors with protecting communities. Inglewood must ensure that its growth is sustainable and does not displace residents or disrupt neighborhoods. One way that Inglewood can protect residents now is to regulate short-term rentals listed on platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, Booking.com and many others.

Evidence from cities across the globe shows that unregulated STRs drive up rents, fuel evictions, and make it harder to find affordable housing. The influx of visitors to Inglewood incentivizes corporate landlords and speculators to rent to tourists instead of tenants. During Superbowl weekend, Inglewood STRs were rented for upwards of $2,000 for a single night. Few tenants can compete with the profits made from vacation rentals. Without regulation of STRs, greedy outsiders, corporations, and speculators will continue to exploit our already limited housing stock for profit.
Furthermore, when STRs grow in popularity, we often see investors and LLCs purchasing homes only to use them exclusively as STR businesses. This takes housing away from families that wish to purchase a home to occupy. The primary residence requirement will help to ensure that landlords are not choosing tourists over tenants. Inglewood must protect its housing to ensure its residents are not pushed out as the City grows.
The recent shooting at an Airbnb in Inglewood exposes the dangers of unregulated STRS being used as party venues. In residential areas, unsupervised STRs often turn into “party houses” that host large loud gatherings every weekend. Residents struggle with noisy and intoxicated crowds. The City must require STRs to be hosted, with the owner present at the property throughout the rental, to ensure that there is a responsible person there to prevent homes being used as unregulated dance clubs and the accompanying litter, noise, and potential for violence.
Inglewood doesn’t have to come up with STR regulations on their own. Nearby Santa Monica is a model for balancing strong STR regulations to protect housing and jobs with a booming tourism economy that welcome visitors from around the world. Inglewood should adopt regulations that prohibit unhosted STRs, require registration, and limit STRs to primary residences.
Now is the time for the City of Inglewood to act to balance its exciting developments with protections for its residents. They must adopt regulations that welcome visitors and protect housing and public safety.

LOL regulations on STR because some gang took out another gang? cmon now, this has nothing to do with STR. Stop gang violence and put your focus there in my opinion.
It’s interesting how you mentioned here that when short term rentals become popular, more investors would start developments as well. I would understand how this can be beneficial yet regulations and compliance laws must also be put in place. Everything must be set to balance in terms of accommodations for tourists and locals.
I don’t want to sound disrespectful but people getting killed has absolutely nothing to do with Airbnb. The house didn’t cause the shooting , people did ! What we need to be doing is regulating mental health . Keep Airbnb out of it and let people make money in the most expensive city in the country. We deserve something for what we pay to the city . This income helps so much , more money in the community will help people in poverty that are holding on to their homes! How many people have been shot and robbed at liquor stores in the community ? Do we go and shut all liquor stores down because of it ? No! People just want to make excuses to rape us and tax us for more money that we already pay !
Regulations are needed to ensure 1) the person listing the rental is authorized to do so, 2) to ensure the collection of appropriate business and transient occupancy taxes, and 3) have a method to remove listings that aren’t authorized through the city for not having done #2.
As an INGLEWOOD home owner I am against regulating short term rentals. Those of us who chose to stick it out through thick and I mean drive by’s in the 80s thick, thin now have a chance to uplift ourselves. We need to turn our garages into legal ADUs and rent them as STR. This will increase our income by several thousand dollars per month.
I am against str when it comes to residents of CA. If you come in town sure I’ll rent
OMG another fool who thinks HE speaks for all.!
Thank you for assuring us that there foolish worshipers of GREEDY, WOMANIZING, ABUSERS in all ethnicities.
As a LATINA, You DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME.
My heritage is one that places much greater value on family and quality of life for family members rather than on the simplistic GREED and SELF SATISFACTION which appears to be the MOTTO of The JAMES BUTTS REGIME.
My Hispanic Heritage values a SAFE FAMILY FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT without the intrusion of party goers hell bent on disturbing the peace with over the top disregard for neighbors. My Hispanic Heritage value system does not include permitting unchecked drug use, or gun fire as part of entertainment. My Hispanic Heritage teaches that I must be RESPECTFUL TO ALL NEIGHBORS – ESPECIALLY THE ELDERLY who are entitled to quiet nights and not encountering strangers when attempting to enter their own homes.
One does not “uplift” themselves or their family by selling the soul of community one weekend at a time….For consistent improvement to quality of life try encouraging your younger family members to pursue education and enhancing their employment opportunities.
Short term renters can choose from any number of hotels which maintain security staff to control the unruly. Your greedy suggestion to make a few dollars should not require your long term “from the eighties” neighbors to be exposed to the obvious potential rerun of the most recent quadruple homicide.
As for “Supporting Mayor Butts” ~
If you get arrested and your Miranda Rights are violated you probably shouldn’t complain to the judge or public defender — someone will remember that violation is just fine with you …..oh yes, if the police devalue your grandchild’s rights remind him/her it is a fair trade so you can get money on the converted garage.
On the home front
…. do your wife, and daughter’s agree that women being treated like property is acceptable?…. We are all certain the mistress in your life will be expecting some nice golden treasures- but here’s the deal— “those right now gals” will only tolerate you in exchange for the bling, they will not like you or admire your business acumen in transforming the neighborhood atmosphere into a doormat …
If you want to be perceived as a successful businessman sell a product or provide a service but not in a neighborhood.
Nuestras vecinidades son pa nuestras familias .
Ok Mrs Latina, if you REALLY live in Inglewood you know our Hispanic Heritage has us throwing more parties on weekends than any STR. Stick your head out the window, my neighbor was bumping Banda until 1am last week. What district do you live in? I live in district 4.
I have lived in Inglewood all of my life and will encourage my relatives “HOME OWNERS” not Renters like you, to vote for Butts.
Oh my God this really does sound like Jimmy pretending to be Latino.
News flash there is more than one Latina in Inglewood who finds Womanizing disgusting and who values family over money.
So sad you attempt/need to portray anyone who disagrees with you as what you think is less entitled to vocalize or have a descent quality of life because you assume they must be a renter.
Are you actually suggesting those who disagree with you are not or could not possibly be “Homeowners” or that they are automatically not “Really” living in Inglewood?
Using your logic owning a house means you should be allowed to disturb neighboring Homeowners- forcing them to give up their rights to quiet- because you manage your finances so poorly you have to have extra cash.
As a HOMEOWNER my quality of life matters as does that of my Neighbors. While many of my Hispanic Neighbors, who are also Homeowners, have parties to celebrate special occasions often with live Mariachi and they are respectful enough to invite/ advise in advance surrounding neighbors (both African American and Hispanic) and yes borrow/share tables and chairs and also to turn the tunes down long before midnight, in order that their early mass/church attending or Weekend working neighbors are not kept up all night. The clear difference is that by their ownership investment (unlike short term renters) they don’t need to destroy property, block sidewalks, or have guests who are compelled to take their loudness and party trash into the street for neighbors to clean up the next day.
YOU ARE DELUSIONAL!!!
And it is obvious you do not live in Inglewood.
If you do, please tell me where so I can sell one of my MANY properties that I own to live next to you. You cannot keep it real with your cumbaya comments.
Mariachi, Church going. LOL
Real Inglewood is more like BANDA until 3am and LA Cruda the next day.
Like I said, go back to Moreno Valley were you belong!!!!
Dude, you sound like Reina Carrillo running for Mayor. If it is you, I know you and remember your ratchet ways growing up and constant use of the N word. Not to mention going to a drug fueled Super Bowl party a few weeks ago.
Inglewood is a small community. if you truly live there and grew up there, I probably know you.
I will give you a plug. Link is below.

Wow, “Latino for Butts” sounds more like Jimmy with each posting….did he just told us the party he attended was drug fueled ?
Yes Inglewood in comparison to Los Angeles is small. So check the numbers 107 thousand half Latino =53 thousand roughly half of that female = 26 thousand with 75 % of that over 18 = 20ish thousand.
You claiming to know all 20 thousand Latinas over 18…. ??
This player wants us to believe he knows half the woman in Inglewood HAHA now that is truly delusional,
Must be hard for him wondering how many are not falling for the standard “re-elect wonderful me” press conferences.
It just may be that finally Inglewood women -Black/Brown&Other have had enough of the male ego trips. Maybe more and more of those self determined, not dependent on men for their thinking, financially secure without taxpayer funded secretarial/assistant employment are multiplying in number and Awareness everyday.
Whose gonna have trouble sleeping with that possibility?
Women did finally get to vote in 1920, perhaps in November we should vote in the memory of those women who worked so hard for our opportunity by voting for someone who doesn’t devalue women.
Answer the question, what district do you live in?
Also, I am not a player, but having grown up in inglewood with several family member “Home Owners” I have allot of cousins and friends from 120th & Crenshaw to HidePark.
Why are you making this about sexism? Did Mayor Butts touch you in a bad place?
This is about policy on STRs.
