COMPTON, CA – Beginning in the spring 2022 semester, Compton College is offering a new Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program to accommodate students looking to pursue careers in allied health and technical fields and fill the gap in employment of much-needed health care workers. The eight-week course prepares students for entry-level health care worker positions in a long-term care skilled nursing facility. Coursework emphasizes safety principles, infection control, and nursing procedures for providing physical care, and emotional and social support.

Certified Nursing Assistants provide basic human needs nursing care skills to compromised and geriatric residents living in long-term care facilities. Courses include lecture, skills practice in the lab, and direct patient care. Students in this program will develop such skills as safety measures, body mechanics, observation, recording vital signs, and how to meet patients’ emotional, physical, and nutritional needs.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to take the State of California Certified Nursing Assistant certification examination. Certified Nursing Assistants enter at the first level of the nursing career ladder and report directly to a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Registered Nurse. Students who complete the CNA Program will earn five points on their Compton College Associate Degree in Nursing application.

The National Center for Workforce Analysis reports that more than 50 percent of states have reported shortages of allied health personnel and California ranks 48th among states in per capita health services employment. The need will continue to grow with a large aging population. The Certified Nursing Assistant Program is designed to fill the employment gap of caregivers working with the elderly in long-term care facilities.

Compton College also offers a California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approved Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program for those looking to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

There is still time to enroll in the spring 2022 semester at Compton College but act quickly!

More information on Compton College’s Certified Nursing Assistant Program is available online at https://www.compton.edu//gpdiv/health-public-services/cna/cna.aspx.
