City of Compton and KBK Enterprises, Inc. Awarded $21 Million Grant

 Largest grant in Compton’s history to go towards mixed-use, transit-oriented development

Compton, CA — On January 26, 2022, the City of Compton was selected as a recipient of a statewide award and grant, through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program (AHSC). The $21 million grant will assist in the development of a mixed-use, transit-oriented development proposed to be built on Compton Blvd. and for other infrastructure related projects.

“The Compton Innovation Center will not only include housing and commercial, but public spaces, public art and a full campus equipped with learning labs, co-working spaces and more, to foster innovation in technology, arts, and entrepreneurial concepts,” said Mayor Emma Sharif. “We believe this will be a transformative development that not only shaped the future of Compton, but serves as a model for other cities.”

“This grant is the largest in Compton’s history and represents a significant investment in the development and future of the City,” said Compton’s Interim City Manager Ronerick Simpson. “This project will be the starting point of a renaissance of Downtown Compton with the goal of developing the City into a regional center for culture and commerce. We thank the State for recognizing the importance of this project and look forward to working with our development partner, KBK Enterprises, to make this vision a reality.”

The AHSC award is unique in that it is granted by the CA State Strategic Growth Council, which is a Governor’s cabinet level committee in charge of coordinating California’s future growth to provide more affordable housing, greater housing opportunity and equity among different socioeconomic groups, and assist in housing that will reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. Each year they award select public agencies and developers for affordable housing and projects that combat climate change. 

The project for which this award was selected is a mixed-use project at 501-601 E. Compton Blvd. The development includes over 290 residential units, over 7,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space, a 40,000 square foot technology and communications center, and a public plaza for cultural events. This development will be only a few blocks from the Downtown Compton Rail Station.
