LOS ANGELES – A criminal case was dismissed Wednesday against a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who had been charged with raping and sexually assaulting an acquaintance at his home while he was off-duty in October 2018.
A judge found there was insufficient evidence presented to require Jason Ghassan Kailany, now 27, to proceed to trial on one count each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, according to Greg Risling of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
“Our office has not made a decision on whether or not it will be refiling the case,” Risling said.
After the case was filed in November 2020, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said it “originated with, was fully investigated by, and was presented to the Office of the District Attorney for prosecution.”
Kailany’s current status with the sheriff’s department was not available, and his attorney could not be reached for immediate comment.
