Airbnb is under renewed scrutiny after a deadly shooting claimed the lives of four young persons, ranging in age from 21-25 years old on Jan. 23.
The party was located at a short-term rental at 1304 N. Park Ave. in the Northern part of Inglweood. The home was purchased in 2019.
In 2021, the property was approved for an ADU rental in the rear of the front house, where Breahna Stines was celebrating her 20th birthday.
The deadly shooting, which residents have described as a “shoot out” took place at an un-regulated Airbnb.

Airbnb is a “Chairman Circle” member of the Inglewood Airport Area Chamber of Commerce, and is fully aware the City has yet to finalize a short-term rental ordinance. The last public hearing on the matter was Oct. 27, 2020, when the proposed changes to the municipal code and master fee schedule were discussed.
It is unclear why Airbnb is allowing homeowners to post listings on their website knowing it is not allowed in the City.
Airbnb currently lists 300+ unregulated rentals available in Inglewood.
By comparison, in the city of Los Angeles, homeowners are immediately flagged if their listings do not have the required short term registration number. Their listings are immediately removed from accepting reservations for less than 30 days.
Representatives from Airbnb did not return requests for comment.
Airbnb regulations should fall under the city’s housing protection department to ensure registration is taking place once the council finalizes the matter.
Inglewood Mayor James Butts has stated the city will soon take up short-term rentals but didn’t provide any specific timeline.
The scene of the Inglewood shooting that happened this past weekend on Park Ave that left 4 dead and 1 in critical condition. Bullet casings landed in the next door neighbors yard as well. A neighbor said it sounded like at least 100 shots fired.

A short-term rental ordinance would only apply to residential areas where the zoning doesn’t allow commercial activities like overnight rentals. This hotel/hostel is clearly in a commercial zone and the property was already in use as a hotel before the current owners. It just happens that they’re advertising and booking through airbnb, which a lot of smaller hotels do these days. Even airbnb is in the business now of buying, renovating, and listing hotels.
We continue to wait the final ordinance from the City which will spell out all of the regulations for both commercial and residential zones.
