SAN PEDRO – A suspect was taken into custody after leading authorities on a pursuit that began in San Pedro and ended near the 110 freeway Sept. 19.
LAPD Harbor Division went into pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle in the area of 5th Street and Grand Avenue. The suspect made his way to Gaffey Street and on to the 110 North. The suspect then bailed out of his SUV, just South of the Sepulveda Boulevard exit, where he ran in lanes on the freeway and attempted to elude authorities on the side of the freeway.
The suspect then entered a tunnel under the freeway where he allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers. LAPD quickly put out an “officer needs help” call, due to shots being fired, and they were able to get responding units to lock down the area. The suspect was taken into custody just West of the 110 freeway – in a nearby field. As of 11:40 p.m., the firearm has not been recovered, but K-9 units are currently canvassing the area.
It is not clear at this time if officers returned fire or if any casings have been recovered.
Deputies from the Carson Sheriff’s station responded to the call for mutual-aid.
