Letter to the Editor: Carson city council should reconsider two items on today’s council agenda

By 2UrbanGirls on May 17, 2022 Opinion

Dear 2UrbanGirls,

I submitted these comments for the public record for tonight’s council meeting on REF:  Agenda Items 27 and 29.

Good Evening Mayor, City Council, staff and Carson Community.

First of all let me state for the record I am here at the request of NO ONE.  I am here to comment on the appeal by Mayor Davis-Holmes and Councilman Dear – agenda Item #27 the project located at 18001 S Main St. and Item #29 the project located at 1055 E. Sandhill.

I have not been approached by anyone or discussed this with anyone.  My comments are solely based on what I read in your agenda report today.

Both these projects received unanimous approval by your nominated and voted on Planning and Economic Development Commissioners.  Folks that you turn to for advice.

Both these projects represent over half a million dollars in income for the City of Carson.  Or to be exact, represent $516,218.20.

Carson has a reputation of specifically opposing the business community as a whole.  However, it appears that if a company contributes enough money to your respective campaigns or supports your community projects, there is no opposition.

The time to make your opposition be known is at the Commission level where adequate time is allowed and professional staff is able to respond and vet any and all concerns you may have.

According to the staff report the reason for the appeal by the elected official need not be publicly disclosed.

How fair is that?  It’s the opposite of transparent.  Let’s call it what it appears to be – abuse of power.

Let me point out that a project in the South side of town on Wilmington and 220th was similar to what is proposed tonight. That location was a nuisance and eyesore for many years.  Go by the project today and you will see a beautiful building, pleasant aesthetics and no complaints.  This 220th Street project was right across the street from a residential community, while these projects you are appealing tonight are NOT across from any residential community.

With all due respect, stop your political extortion and stop ruining Carson’s reputation.

Vera Robles DeWitt
