LOS ANGELES – The children’s film “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”opened with $71 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released today.
The sequel to 2020’s hit, which once again features Jim Carrey and is based on a video game franchise, beat out last weekend’s top-grossing film,“Morbius,” which took in $10.2 million Friday through Sunday in its second week at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Tika Sumpter return for this sequel about the otherworldly, bright blue hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz) based on Sega’s hugely successful video game and media franchise. The story continues Sonic’s adventures on Earth following his arrival from a distant planet and his fumbling attempts to befriend a couple living in Montana.
