INGLEWOOD – The Inglewood Unified School District will host a public meeting Monday, Mar. 7, to discuss the pending closure of Warren Lane Elementary School.
The last time the district tried this, the residents fought back and won a one year reprieve, to increase enrollment, which was stymied due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the district holding meeting recommending closure of multiple schools, they took the route of consolidating the Adult School (which is miniscule), and close Warren Lane, which sits in the Morningside Park neighborhood where home sales have topped $1 million.
A member of the Morningside High Alumni Association tipped off the community that the district selected Harridge Developers to build housing on the vacant land at the former Woodworth site, and the empty parcel between them and Morningside.
Harridge Developers were donors to Mayor Butts campaign and were initially awarded the opportunity to build at the old Daniel Freeman Hospital site, until the residents fought back over the amount of planned units.
There has been no public plans made available to the public about what the district plans to do with Warren Lane, however, the City has increased density and appears inevitable that housing will be built there too.
According Assembly Bill 1840, the district will receive $10 million for closing schools, on top of the multi-million dollar bond residents voted for last year, and back when Measure GG passed.
Residents have collectively given Inglewood Unified School District close to $500 million in added property tax assessments, to fix the schools, and we continue to lose 500 students a year, and have below average test scores.
Instead of putting money back into the classroom, they are steering it away from “school repairs” under the guise of cost-savings from the closures.
The District has made it impossible to find details of the Mar. 7 meeting, as there is no post on any of their social media accounts about it, however, we have the details.
The meeting is scheduled for 4pm, instead of 5:30pm like the school board meetings.
