Fifteen Compton residents have submitted applications for the vacant District 1 council seat. They all appear to meet the Compton City Charter requirements to be appointed as the next Councilmember, after the abrupt resignation of Michelle Chambers.
Councilmembers have started to read through applications and answer calls from community members voicing their support for appointment for candidates to represent Distict 1.
Here is what we know so far about a few candidates who names look familiar.
Elizabeth Atkinson: City Planning Commissioner
Michael Hill: Community Activist
Janna Zurita: Former Councilmember for District 1
Maria Gomez: Community Activist
Omar Bradley Jr.: Son of Former Mayor Omar Bradley
Deidre Duhart: Former Commissioner
Dawn Franks: Community Activist
Jasper Jackson: Current Candidate for State Insurance Commissioner
Mary Edwards: Community Activist
Fidel Marquez: Block Club President
Joseph Lewis: Compton College Administrator
At the time of this article, the other candidates and their involvement in Compton outside of being a resident and voter is unknown. One thing that is painfully obvious is Compton’s spiraling decline of economic growth and city services.
Compton Councilmembers are faced with a tough choice to make at their next meeting on April 5, 2022. Do they choose the applicant who has legislative experience or take a chance on someone new to the workings of city hall?
