Inglewood Assemblymember doesn’t support extending eviction, foreclosure protections for families

Inglewood Assemblywoman Autumn Burke was missing in action on a key bill to extend eviction protections for thousands of California residents affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Burke, along with Asm. Shirley Weber, who is vigorously fighting for “reparations” for African-American’s, failed to vote on Assembly Bill 3088 which extends both eviction and foreclosure protections for an additional five months.

“Great news! My colleagues and I just passed legislation, #AB3088, to extend eviction moratorium for renters for another 5 months and protect landlords and homeowners from foreclosure while the pandemic continues to cause hardships. It’s a temporary fix and not perfect,” said Asm. Kansen Chu. “We need to pass this as the eviction moratorium expires tomorrow. Without this bill, many will end up on the streets. This temporary relief will give us time to continue working on long-term solutions.”

African-American’s have been hit particularly hard as the pandemic has resulted in Blacks accounting for 11% of the states COVID-19 cases.  The Employment Development Department has recorded 22 million unemployment claims with many reporting egregious wait times to reach representatives.

Inglewood has been hit particularly hard recording 2,637 positive coronavirus tests and 82 deaths and San Diego County, where Asm. Weber is a representative, has recorded over 38,000 coronavirus cases have been reported with 682 reported deaths.

Prior to Burke assuming office she made a lucrative living as a real estate consultant under her company Mandeville Group LLC.  She has passed legislation benefitting the industry as it relates to the leasing and/or selling off land owned by struggling school districts.

The city of Inglewood has specifically extended protections and established a COVID Rent Relief and Debit Card program to help the city’s most vulnerable residents.  Burke’s failure to vote on extending key protections shows how out of touch she is with her community and has no business representing working class people while being blind to their struggle.

These two women have leveraged black issues: affirmative action, poverty and reparations, to keep their names in the news as so-called “champions” of Black people but their failure to vote on issues having a direct affect on their livelihood shows they’re hypocrites and should not be trusted.

Black and minority mom and pop property owners are struggling too. This bill was not the way and I support her withholding her vote from this flawed and potentially illegal bill.

Autumn who? When was the last time she was in the district? We never see her.

Thanks for calling out her hypocrisy. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and doesn’t know real struggle. Keep telling the truth. Our Black reps have continually failed us.
