HAWTHORNE, California—Hawthorne City Councilmember Haidar Awad distributed one-thousand medical grade face masks to United Healthcare Workers (SEIU-UHW) at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center this past Thursday and will be doing the same to frontline healthcare workers in Hawthorne this coming week.
Councilmember Awad joined Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager (D-Los Angeles), Chair of the Los Angeles County Delegation of thirty-nine State Senators and Assemblymembers and Tracy Hernandez, Founding CEO of the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) as the first and only city council member to participate in the public-private partnership called EquipLA a collaborative effort that collects and donates personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies to frontline workers during this COVID-19 pandemic.
Assemblymember Kamlager recognized the efforts of Councilmember Awad and others present as they “partner together to do what is right and to do what good.”
Councilmember Awad obtained high-quality KN95 face masks deemed critical supplies for health care workers and other medical first responders by the CDC. Tracy Hernandez from BizFed commented that Councilmember Awad has “the distinction of being the first council member to lean in to make a gift of this magnitude happen today” since state senators, assembly members and county supervisors were so far the only elected participants in EquipLA.
“I was delighted to contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our frontline heroes,” said Councilmember Awad, “Anything we can do to protect those who protect us is the right thing to do. Next week we will distribute another thousand masks to frontline healthcare workers in Hawthorne.”
“On behalf of our members and our community of physicians, nurses, and staff, I want to thank you for your donation…it’s going to save lives,” said Kirk Tamaddon, M.D., Area Medical Director and Chief of Staff of Kaiser Permanente, West Los Angeles.
Formed by the BizFed Institute (BFI) a tax-exempt organization, EquipLA partners include all 39 State Senators and Assemblymembers representing Los Angeles County, Los Angeles County, the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC), Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Los Angeles Locals, along with the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) 195 business associations representing over 400,000 employers
