Compton officials are seeking to have a wrongful death lawsuit dismissed citing the fault of the victim as causing his death. Two city employees were enjoined to the lawsuit as presumed occupants of the car, which one of them vehemently denies having been in the car.
Jose Portillo was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Compton and Sloan in the afternoon of June 18, 2019. Toxicology reports state his blood alcohol content level was over the legal limit.
The city’s lawyers are stating Portillo caused his death by riding his bicycle intoxicated and without an operable brake pedal.
Portillo was in the marked crosswalk at the time he was struck by the vehicle.
Tene Kishan, former liaison to Councilwoman Emma Sharif, has been dismissed from the lawsuit. She vehemently denied her presence in the vehicle. The police report doesn’t list Kishan as an occupant in the vehicle either.
It is unclear why attorney Sung Kim, with the Dordrick Law Corporation, included Kishan in the lawsuit or how her name was obtained. Kim has refused multiple requests for comment on his firms inability to file against the correct parties.
Compton taxpayers are still confused as to why they are on the hook for legal fees when McKenzie was operating her personal vehicle and not a car in the city’s fleet.

Everyone knows the passenger of the car was Michelle Chambers; why do you think she ran, maybe under the influence doing business hours????????♂️
Very good, I’m happy the innocent person was cleared. It is a sad situation but innocent people should not be accused of something they were not involved in. The jails are full of innocent people with no proof of their alleged crimes.
She hit someone and go a slap on the wrist it not fair to the family she need to be put in jail period!!!
