The Hawthorne City Council were due to vote on Urgency Ordinance No. 2194 at yesterday’s (November 26th) regular city council meeting. The urgency ordinance was to prohibit no-fault evictions through the end of the year.

The urgency ordinance is designed to ensure Hawthorne renters are able to stay in their homes and not be faced with heavy rent increases and/or evictions, until the state housing measure, AB 1482 kicks in on January 1, 2020.
AB 1482 will mandate that ALL housing providers accept Section 8, and use a reduced formula for calculating income eligibility for Veterans. AB 1482 also imposes an annual rent increase cap at 5%.
Due to key members of the Hawthorne City Council being absent, most notably Republican Mayor Alex Vargas, the urgent ordinance failed to have enough votes to pass. City Treasurer L. David Patterson took to his social media account to denounce the city’s failure to preserve housing for the city’s renters.
It is no surprise considering that Councilman Mike Talleda’s form 700s indicate he earns up to $100,000 annually as a real estate broker with Shoreline Realty.
Talleda is also the owner of several residential income properties in Hawthorne as well.

Month isn’t over, we’ll see what comes about..thanks
it won’t matter unless the ordinance is retroactive to void notices that may have already been issued as of the 1st of this month.
Who proposed the emergency ordinance? We read it was Mayor Alex Vargas
Thanks
He proposed it and then didn’t show up to vote on it? Sounds like a PR stunt!
I watched the meeting last week, sounded like Hawthorne treasurer David Patterson threw 2 urban girls under the bus.
He coward to councilman Talleda, and blame 2 urban girls for making up things.what a shame.
I believe he set the record straight that he wasn’t involved in the publishing of my article.
I saw Patterson’s comments on the topic and took it upon myself to view the forms which have been listed on the city’s website for awhile.
It’s sad that city’s around the South Bay are protecting their renters and Hawthorne chose not to.
Hawthorne is not protecting residents?? What are you talking about? Don’t you remember your old buddy Mayor Brown?? That is not carrying about a city.
Councilman Haidar Awad has been hiding, and only giving away turkeys, toys to his car dealer empoyees and families, calling it
“community” events, thats shameful.Get the story right.
