The city of Gardena council members voted 4-0 to prohibit no-fault evictions. Ordinance No. 1812 will add Chapter 14.17 which provides for the prohibition to run through December 31, 2019. The council’s actions stopped 34 renters from being displaced by the end of the year.
The ordinance was designed to stop mass evictions before AB 1482 kicks in on January 1, 2020. The ordinance also prohibits the raising of rent beyond 5% + the percentage change of the consumer price index (CPI).
Mayor Pro Tem Art Kaskanian was not in attendance to make the vote unanimous.
