Will the City of Compton be SUED to Enforce Provisions of the City’s Charter

Latino residents have secured a HUGE victory in forcing the Compton Unified School District to draw district lines and remove at-large voting for school board seats. Will Latino’s also have to sue the city of Compton, to enforce specific provisions outlined in the city’s charter, related to voting as well?

Section 500 of the charter explicitly states that once the city’s population exceeds 100,000 residents, the city council MUST establish two additional voting districts. A recent article published in LosCerritosNews.net states the city’s population exceeds 103,000 residents. Will Mayor Aja Brown take the lead and make a motion to declare new council districts be drawn up? Recent newsletters, from the Mayor herself, discuss “a new season” in Compton, leading residents to believe she has created an all female voting block to move the city forward.

Compton Unified School District, which encompasses Compton, parts of Carson, Long Beach, Paramount,  Willowbrook, and Lynwood, is home to over 160,000 people, a large majority, 103,330 (64.3%), are Hispanic or Latino; eligible Latino voters comprise over 47% of the population.

In addition, according  to the California Department of Education, of the nearly 23,000 CUSD students, 78.7% are Hispanic or Latino.

Yet the entire CUSD Board – President Micah Ali, VP Satra Zurita, Clerk Charles Davis, and members Mae Thomas, and Sandra Moss – are all African-American, and it has been that way for over a decade. Margie Garrett, who passed away in July, was also African American as is current CUSD Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley.
