Has the City of Compton violated Ca. Government Section 1090 by appointing former City Attorney Craig Cornwell to the position of City Manager? Did Cornwell play a role in negotiating his own contract for city manager?
Section 1090 prohibits public officials from being financially interest in any contract made by them in their official capacity, or by any body or board of which they are members.
These questions are now under official investigation as Greg Risling, spokesperson for the LA County District Attorney’s office, confirmed to 2UrbanGirls via email. Risling confirmed they have received more than one complaint on the topic.
The City Manager position is the first item listed on tomorrow’s regular city council agenda.
Risling declined to comment on questions related to Compton Mayor Aja Brown simultaneously using the official city seal alongside the logo of her nonprofit, Urban Vision CDC, for a community convo series she is hosting in the Dollarhide Community Center.

Mayor Brown’s nonprofit came under scrutiny in 2015 when attendees for the city’s 2015 State of the City address were asked to make out checks to her nonprofit instead of the Chamber of Commerce, who would typically host such an event.

A 2UrbanGirls investigation revealed that UrbanVision CDC didn’t raise enough funds to cover the event and taxpayers ended up footing the bill for an event where they were served hot dogs in the gym of Compton College.
