Inglewood Rent Stabilization Ordinance Unveiled this Week

This week’s Inglewood City Council agenda is short but to the point.

Closed session items include LASC Case No.: 19TRCV00433 Islas v City of Inglewood. Islas is an Inglewood Police Officer attached to the shooting of Kisha Michael and Marquintin Sandlin. Five officers who were fired for the actual shooting have filed suit saying that two senior Latino officers on the scene retained their jobs. It is unclear why Islas is suing the city.

Another interesting item is a payment to ABC Builders Inc. for “unforeseen and necessary public safety work” at Ashwood Park. The council is expected to approve the $198,742 invoice to be paid from the General Fund RESERVE account. It is unclear why this unforseen work wasn’t included in the original scope of services.

Finally, Mayor James Butts will present his long awaited Rent Stabilization Ordinance to eager Inglewood residents.

The ordinance will establish an 8% cap on rent increases, with a relocation allowance program for rents exceeding 4%, limit rent increases to once every 12 months, a just cause eviction policy and an exemption for properties containing less than (4) units.

The maximum relocation allowance is $7,500. In theory, if your rent is $1,770, your base relocation allowance is $5,310. There are also restrictions for the elderly and disabled.
