Compton City Council incumbents Emma Sharif and Janna Zurita are headed to a June 4th runoff. Neither lady captured 50% + 1 of the vote. What’s most shocking is who they will be running against.
2UrbanGirls has received a flurry of inbox messages involving the petty and embarrassing tactics used by many of those who sought office.
Candidates have alleged that the incumbents are sending people to stalk their residence, take ballots out of individuals mailboxes and resort to having community members slander residents opposing Janna Zurita, in particular.
Mysteriously, District 4 candidate Justin Blakely appears to be Sharif’s opponent in June, despite him not attending a single candidates forum.
Michelle Chambers appears to be Zurita’s challenger. She has had to endure her landlords being threatened with code violations, which they must obviously have, in order to have them remove Chambers as their tenant. With Compton not having a rent control ordinance, Chambers has little to no recourse for being asked to move.
Polling data shows Zurita and Blakely benefitted from an enormous amount of vote by mail (VBM) ballots being cast in their favor. Rumors on the ground come from candidates like Jasper Jackson telling folks he’s seen members of the Blakely/Zurita camps stealing ballots from mailboxes. Jackson refused to respond to inquiries on the subject.
Chambers was able to receive all of her votes from those headed to the polls. Zurita benefits from name recognition and not from any real work she is doing on behalf of the community, unless you count the parties her sister throws for the seniors now that she is the head of the Dollarhide Senior Center.
Residents have been up in arms over the failing infrastructure of the city for years. Roads are crumbling and many have brown water, yet the areas Congresswoman Nanette Barragan supported the incumbents. Barragan has yet to publicly identify how her office will ensure the roads and water in her district are safe and consumable. Instead she is making a name for herself championing immigration while a huge chunk of her district is local news fodder over the enormous amounts of potholes engulfing the city.
How embarrassing that out of an alleged 23,750 registered voters, less than 4,000 votes were cast? There a still a hefty amount of provisional ballots to count.
Compton continues to fail and residents have no one to blame but themselves.
