Inglewood Assemblymember Autumn Burke is relying on the family surname to get to the next elected seat. She has filed intentions to fill the seat of termed out Sen. Holly Mitchell to represent Senate District 30 in 2022.
It is no secret to Inglewood residents she has blinders on when it comes to the city that got her in her seat.
She hosts many of her events in Lawndale, where one of her staffers serves as that city’s mayor. She is ALWAYS spotted everywhere but in Inglewood. When we start making noise, she pushes a whimsical bill in our face, usually pertaining to Inglewood Unified School District. On occasions she shows her face for photo ops.
Many sitting and former elected officials have reached out to 2UrbanGirls, under condition of anonymity, who say they are attempting to get former Sen. Isadore Hall to run for Mitchell’s seat. Mitchell had an easy win, running unopposed. Burke normally has no issues defeating no name Republicans, but going up against the seasoned Hall, could spell trouble for Ms. Burke.
Isadore Hall has served on every level of government in the State of California. School board, city council, state assembly and senate. He now sits on a state agricultural board, and has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office.
Hall was instrumental in passing SB-533 to ensure IUSD remained solvent. He assisted in passing legislation to get cities revenue from billboard advertisements in redevelopment areas (despite this author’s displeasure). This author remembers the early days of Hall hosting breakfast roundtables for small businesses, while serving on Compton City Council, and prior to that he served on Compton School Board when they came out of receivership.
Burke’s record, in Inglewood is a real snoozer. In 2014 she ran on a platform to appease residents in Athens and Inglewood. She relied on her mother, and former members of then Assemblymember Steve Bradford’s staff to get elected.
It is no secret Burke isn’t well liked in Sacramento, as she faced allegations of engaging in inappropriate conversations with members of her staff, she fired the staff member who was key to her election and overall comes across as bourgeois and entitled because of her last name.
It is also no secret Inglewood couldn’t rely on Burke to get important legislation passed, related to the proposed Clippers arena, it was put in the hands of political newcomer Sydney Kamlager.
All she’s done for Inglewood is make it easier for Inglewood Unified School District land to be leveraged to pay down the debt related to Senate Bill 533. That doesn’t make her the least bit qualified to be Senator.
A race between Burke and Hall would surely highlight her deficiencies and most likely give way for a real opponent to step up in the 2020 Assembly race, which she still has to take part in next year. Many would say she won’t be focused on current duties, as she will be too busy looking to the next seat.
The wild card is Jerome Horton who has also filed for the Senate District 30 seat despite him being the impetus for the reform at the Board of Equalization.
