2UrbanGirls has reached out to all candidates who are challenging Councilwoman Emma Sharif. Inez “Tootie” Adkins shares her plans for Compton District 4.
What should Compton residents know about you and why you are running for District 4 council person?
The Compton community should know that I am a lifetime resident, I am a God fearing woman, proud mother of four, and successful business owner. I am and have been an active community member of District 4 for thirty years. I stand on the shoulders of my parents that instilled in me, a sense of community pride, a love for people and a dedication to serve. I am running because I am unhappy with the current leadership and I am committed to leading with integrity and in the best interest of the community. I believe we as taxpayers deserve better, can do better and I am seeking your vote to effectively represent you in the 4th District.
What motivated you to run for this seat?
I am motivated to run for this seat because 4 years ago, we were promised a new 4th District. And over the past four years we have had nothing but more potholes and broken promises. I can no longer sit on the sidelines and see the missed opportunities to improve the quality of life in our community. The poor conditions of our streets, illegal dumping, growing prostitution and vacant lots, are examples of areas I will immediately address and ensure Compton does not lose out on basic services that we as tax payers deserve.
Have you ever voted in a Compton election, prior to running for this seat?
Yes, I have been an active voter since 1992. Voting in local elections are important!
What issues are most important in your District AND the city overall?
We have a fiscal and social responsibility to our residents and we need to ensure the right community improvements are being funded. In District 4, we have growing concerns for maintenance to our streets, fixing potholes that now have become sink holes, street racing and ending prostitution on Long Beach Blvd. In the city, the pothole issues are all the same, we also have a need for street lighting and maintenance of the overgrown city trees. I will enhance services for our seniors, increase employment opportunities for the youth and cleaning up our streets by addressing the human trafficking epidemic on Long Beach Boulevard, which are my top priorities.
Have you opened a campaign account to raise funds?
Yes, an important part of the requirements in the election process is opening an election account. This allows me to build public trust, increase awareness in our campaign message and keep my commitment to transparency without strings.
Finally, what should residents expect from you if you are elected?
Residents should expect immediate action. I’ve heard time and time again while knocking on our District 4 doors, that people want repaired and cleaner streets, employment and an end to the ramped prostitution on Long Beach Blvd. As your council member, I will work to ensure that city policies, programs and services are aligned to support these priorities. I will focus on the social concerns that directly impact our neighborhoods.
