Marlo Richardson is a Black woman success story. She was a property owner before 21. Successful restaurateur in Venice, CA. And until early 2018, had an 18-year career with the Los Angeles World Airport Police Department (LAXPD). She was also appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown as the first Black woman at the CA State Licensing Board.
In her legal filing she claims that Chief David Maggard, Jr has a pattern of discriminating against Black sworn police officers.
Richardson details how an anonymous letter began circulating around the department alleging she was sleeping with male co-workers. The filing also details her use of her “personal car” during her lunch break as being an issue with her superiors.
2UrbanGirls reached out to Richardson who had this to say. “Racist tactics and bullying occurs within police departments as well as in our neighborhoods,” said Richardson. “There is a very clear pattern there, and this is just one of many.”
The lawsuit goes on to state Human Resources approved a light duty request, submitted by Richardson, without requiring a doctor’s note or medical verification.
In February 2016, it was alleged she was committing timecard fraud. In June 2017, Richardson was informed Chief Maggard was taking action on the timecard fraud claims.
Her lawsuit states that since September 1, 2016, when Maggard was promoted to Chief, eleven (11) Black employees faced disciplinary procedures. Many claim that under Mayor Butts Black employees received preferred treatment that didn’t carry over under the individuals who took his place.
The lawsuit notes that a Black male Sergeant also faced time card fraud allegations and took a demotion from Sergeant in lieu of termination. The department must have compelling evidence, to support Richardson’s termination after 18 years on the job.
Richardson further shared with 2UrbanGirls that many in the department have sought out her attorney’s assistance to help with possible future claims against the department.
Richardson has since rebounded as an Executive Producer of the film Compton’s Finest and has opened a Burgerim restaurant in the city of Torrance.
