Following a play out of the city of Inglewood playbook, the city of Carson has severed ties with Waste Management (WM). According to the Daily Breeze, WM has provided services to the city of Carson for nearly 15 years. WM has filed a lawsuit alleging the bidding process was flawed and failed to take into account the revenue the city would realize by accepting their bid. Interestingly, WM was the long time trash hauler in the city of Inglewood and after failing to win the renewal of their contract they made allegations that Inglewood Mayor James Butts attempted to leverage renewing their contract in exchange for hiring his brother but failed to sue the city for attempted extortion.

In February of this year the city council awareded the trash hauling contract to Gardena based Water Resources Inc. The agreement was approved 3-1 with Councilman Cedric Hicks being the only dissenter. The city explained notices were mailed to residents in early January about contracting with WRI and only 12 protests were received, officials said.

“Rather than professionally and cooperatively accepting this careful determination of the City Council, and rather than facilitating the seamless transition in waste hauling and recycling services as it is legally required to do, Waste has chosen to (as it were) stomp its feet, kick and scream, throw a tantrum and otherwise behave in an unseemly manner,” he said in a statement. “The residents of Carson deserve far better treatment than this childish behavior from a large and successful company like Waste. Waste certainly knows that filing its frivolous lawsuit and dragging its feet in providing the needed transition information risks an interruption in service to Carson residents and businesses, which is manifestly unfair, not to mention conduct in bad faith.”

The last time the city of Carson made the news regading their trash contract, it was due to the city’s former Mayor Darryl Sweeney being arrested for conspiring to extort the haulers seeking the contract. Sweeney was also convicted for his involvement in two anonymous mailers sent to residents asking them to reject the change in trash haulers.
