Letter to the Editor: Please help the Inglewood High School Football Team

With TWO National Football League (NFL) teams headed to Inglewood, CA, you would think it would be a no brainer that the city’s varsity football teams would be well taken care of.  Wrong.  The head football coach is soliciting the community to make donations to help purchase uniforms and helmets for the teams.  The L.A. Rams have made a paltry $10k donation to Highland Elementary and helped build a play yard at Warren Lane but nothing that really stands out for a team building a $4 billion dollar stadium in the heart of our city.  The L.A. Chargers haven’t supported our students at all.  2UrbanGirls reached out to Inglewood Unified School Board Member Dr. D’artganan Scorza who could not be reached for comment at time of publishing.

Dear Friends of the Community,

As the 2018-19 football season approaches the Inglewood Football Team at Inglewood High School is in desperate need of new uniforms and equipment. This is my first season as the Head Football Coach. Besides being the new Head Football Coach, I’m also the school’s Athletic Director. In one year, I’ve seen the entire sports program on campus in need of support. This Spring I inherited a football program that had old jerseys, old pants, old shoulder pads and not one football. We have just enough helmets to dress one team or two small teams.

This Spring the representative from the Riddell Company came by to pick up our helmets for reconditioning. He saw how bad everything looked and the things the program was missing.I expressed to him that we have NO soft pads such as knee, thigh, hip and but pads. A few weeks after his visit, he gave me a call and informed me that the Westlake High, Head Coach in Thousand Oaks had equipment that he could donate to Inglewood High. As a prideful man I was grateful for the items but also embarrassed, that it has come to this. As a Teacher and AD, students are my first priority and there safety on and off the field is my top priority. The uniforms that are currently being used by the school have seen better days. Through the past years seasons of play, the uniforms have seen a lot of action. In order to keep the program growing and moving in the right direction, these new uniforms and equipment are vital. Our athletes have been working hard all Spring long and will continue this work ethic into summer.

The goal of my coaching staff and I are to reward our students for their hard work with brand new Nike Athletics football uniforms. Just like many other school districts, covering the cost of these uniforms can be difficult task to accomplish. Our program has selected a stock model uniform that will bring a sense of pride to the football players at Inglewood High. These athletes deserve to wear their uniforms with confidence and with these new uniforms that can be a reality. After a few months of researching uniforms and comparing prices of the different uniform models, the uniforms have been selected with the help of the Eastbay Team and their great program. The dream of having new uniforms and equipment is one step closer to reality. The new uniforms and equipment will cost approximately $7,000. That cost includes 40 new home and away game football jerseys, 40 new home and away game pants, 15 helmets and few shoulder pads, plus plenty of soft pads for Varsity and JV team. The football program at Inglewood High School is seeking any donations to help offset this cost.
