In 2004 Compton residents lost local control of Compton community college. The colleges accreditation was also lost two years later. El Camino College (ECC) board trustees then took over the college calling it “satellite” campus, where ECC trustees received an increase in their stipend to run both campuses. Under the direction of current administrator Dr. Keith Curry, it was announced in June of this year, that the campus will return to local control. The transition is not immediate and has a current Compton Community College (CCC) board trustee confused on whether they will participate in the 2018 Commencement Ceremony for CCC students.[adsenseyu2]

On November 27th, Dr. Deborah LeBlanc, sent email to Dr. Curry seeking clarification of the role she and other CCC trustees would play in the commencement ceremonies. The email was also sent to 2UrbanGirls seeking answers on why they are being left in the dark.
Community members in the city of Compton complain of being left out of the decision making process, now that the campus has cleared a major hurdle towards re-establishing local control and the resuming of duties by the elected board of trustees.
Dr. Keith Curry came on board in 2013 after former CCC President Arthur Tyler left for City College of San Francisco in 2013. Tyler was charged with returning local control of the college yet resigned amid controversy surrounding his travel in January 2016.
2UrbanGirls sought comment from Dr. Curry, who provided the following statement:
The 2018 Compton College Commencement Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in the Football/ Soccer Stadium. As a part of the Compton College transition, the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees will participate in the ceremony as members of the platform party, along with the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees. Please note, since Compton College students are receiving El Camino College degrees the El Camino Community College District Board of Trustees will continue to issue the diplomas during the ceremony.
Compton District and El Camino Community College District are currently working on Substantive Change Proposal to Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) requesting the Compton District assume authority over Compton College. We anticipate the change in authority of Compton College to be completed sometime in 2019. If we meet our timeline then in June 2020, the Compton District Board of Trustees will issue the diplomas during that year ceremony.
