In April 2017 Compton Unified School District (CUSD) issued a press release touting the success of the schools students under the current board of trustees. Dominguez High School lost their WASC accreditation, the month after CUSD heralded the “turnaround” in the district. With school board elections less than a day away, the local paper has determined the “turnaround” is a farce and the most vocal and visible board trustee has refused to refute the data. 2 Urban Girls must concur with the Compton Herald that new board trustees are not only warranted but desperately needed.

The Compton “turnaround” only tracked students who entered the district as freshman during the 2012-13 school year and who were due to graduate in the 2016-17 school year. The data didn’t take into account the rest of the students. Less than a month later, 1/3 of the city’s high schools lost WASC accreditation due to a plethora of issues, including increasing the attendance of teachers and most shockingly the school has deviated significantly away from accreditation.

The Compton Herald analyzed data found on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results in English language arts and mathematics. Here is what they found and this is the data that Board Trustee Micah Ali refuses to dispute:
- Manuel Dominguez HS: 21 percent met CAASPP standards for English language arts (79 percent did not meet proficiency); only 6 percent met standards in mathematics (94 percent did not meet proficiency).
- Compton HS: 19 percent met CAASPP standards for English language arts (81 percent did not meet proficiency); only 3 percent met standards in mathematics (97 percent did not meet proficiency).
- Centennial HS: 14 percent met CAASPP standards for English language arts (86 percent did not meet proficiency); only 2 percent met standards in mathematics (98 percent did not meet proficiency).
- Cesar Chavez Continuation HS: 1 percent met CAASPP standards for English language arts (99 percent did not meet proficiency); 0 percent met standards in mathematics (0 percent did not meet proficiency).
The overall percentages for 2016-17 in English language arts was 13.75 percent, and 2.75 percent in mathematics.
Compton students are being left behind at a crucial time where jobs are scarce and housing costs an arm and a leg.
Compton students deserve better and with 19 persons to choose from, 2 Urban Girls looks forward to seeing NEW faces on the Board of Trustees.
