There is a false perception that wealth negates corruption. Former LA Dodger turned Mayor of San Cristobal (Dominican Republic) Raul Mondesi proved that is a lie. Mondesi was sentenced to 8 years in prison when an audit of city finances showed a $3.9 million dollar discrepancy.

Mondesi, served six-year terms as mayor from 2010 to 2016, and was a $3.35 million for his crimes.
Mondesi entered politics in 2005 after spending 13 seasons in the MLB as an outfielder for the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Angels, and Braves.
During the 2010 mayoral election, he ran as mayor for San Cristobal as part of the Dominican Libertarian Party. A year later he joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party.
‘The audit found alleged the inconsistencies in the purchase of consumables, toys, tires and other items in violation of Law 340-06, in addition to withholding taxes from the Internal Taxes Agency and the undocumented rental of vehicles,’ according to the report obtained by Dominican Today.
Mondesi first became the focus of an investigation in 2015 for misappropriation of more than $200million.
