How is Inglewood Unified spending Inglewood residents tax money

What’s going on inside of Inglewood Unified School District?  Well, four years ago Inglewood residents passed a $90 million bond to repair our schools. They did so not knowing we were in receivership.   Inglewood Unified (IUSD) operates 22 sites on property they own outright.  Property taxes remain at miniscule levels thanks to Prop 13 and student enrollment is holding steady.  State administrator Dr. Vincent Matthews released IUSD’s March newsletter highlighting projects that have already been completed and what is to come.  The Measure GG Oversight Committee’s next meeting, which will include a performance and finance audit, will take place Thursday, March 16th at the Inglewood High School multipurpose room at 231 S. Grevillea Ave and will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.

According to the approved bylaws, the Oversight committee only has to inform and release information to the public that reflects the majority of the Committee.  Apparently the committee doesn’t agree seeing that no communication is coming out.  Despite one of the members of the committee currently running for school board, residents have to rely on school board member D’artganan Scorza to share the good news.

Dr. Matthews lists the following accomplishments thus far:

  1. New roofs at Inglewood, Morningside, Kelso, Centinela, Monroe, Woodworth and the Child Development Center. (IUSD received $10 millon from LAWA in 2015 for repairs related to: Payne Elementary School Woodworth Elementary School Child Development Center at Woodworth Elementary School);
  2. All sites have new LED lighting;
  3. new pool heaters at Inglewood and Morningside;
  4. New play structures at: Woodworth, Centinela and Kelso;
  5. New blacktop for basketball courts at Inglewood;
  6. Coleman Field has been refurbished;new sound system, bleachers and paint;
  7. Multiple sites received repairs to broken pipes and cracked sidewalks (no specific school sites are listed);
  8. ALL sites had their bathrooms deep cleaned and broken ceiling tiles were repaired.

The conditions of Inglewood High school bathrooms made national news when KPCC found a filthy campus in 2014, that Dr. Brann promised would be “deep cleaned”.  Three years later, the bathrooms look no better.

During a January basketball game at Inglewood High, this author took pictures of the current state of the bathrooms and either the students are hella nasty or the number of janitor’s on campus need to increase.  Principal Kyle Douglas asked me to stop taking pictures and posting on social media.

The former facilities manager, spoke at great length with 2 Urban Girls about the severe asbestos problem, throughout the district, that causes painting to be an obstacle.  The other is a good majority of our buildings are made from brick which poses even a greater challenge.

It is not clear how the $10 million from LAWA was spent nor the balance of Measure GG proceeds.  We will find out at the next Measure GG Oversight Committee.  Details listed below.  See you there.
