Political newcomer takes on career politician in Los Angeles Council District 9

Los Angeles- City of Los Angeles elections will take place March 7, 2017.  The race of most interest to 2 Urban Girls is Council District 9.  Curren Price Jr. is facing political newcomer Jorge Nuno, who is no stranger to the district and has been a long time investor in the lives of the districts youth.  Unlike his opponent, he has been giving back to the community, long before he decided to enter politics.

Nuno owns NTS Group which specializes in graphic design, and founded “The Big House”, a shared community resource run from a private home.

Nuno tells 2 Urban Girls “The Big House” started off as an investment opportunity.  He planned on refurbishing the property to sell.  Instead, he housed his business there and dedicated space for the community to use.

The idea for “The Big House” came from his mothers childcare business.  “I saw how my mother impacted the children’s lives she cared for and how they always come back to tell her how influential she has been in their life.” said Nuno.

In addition to housing NTS and Nuevo South, The Big House is home to a few other organizations including Root Down LA, which does urban gardening and cooking classes for healthy eating, and even the LA County Parks Foundation has an office there.

Nuevo South, a 501(c)3, has served over 150 youth with high-quality classes and training in graphic design, writing, videography, photography, social media marketing, math, and science—as well as financial literacy, career planning, business incubation, and leadership development. Within the vibrant atmosphere of The Big House, young people are encouraged to think big about how they can transform their own futures.

Thanks to the 2016 Presidential election, the 9th District saw nearly 20,000 new registered voters, this past year, of which more than 70% were Latino.

The 2013 election saw Curren Price narrowly defeating Ana Cubas.  Will this be the year the 9th District votes in a Latino?  Stay tuned.
