Inglewood Unified School Board Member to Present at California’s Premier Education Event for School Board Members

CHEERS-DArtagnan-ScorzaInglewood, Calif., (November 30, 2016) – Inglewood Unified School District Board Member Dr. D’Artagnan Scorza, Ph.D. will join more than 3,000 school board trustees in tackling the most pressing issues facing public education during the California School Boards Association’s (CSBA’s) Annual Education Conference and Trade Show. Hosted at San Francisco’s Moscone West from December 1 – 3, the conference is the premier continuing education event for California school boards, and the largest education leadership conference in the state.

The CSBA conference unites school district governing teams with superintendents, county office of education trustees, education advocates, and some of the world’s top thinkers in exploring methods of good governance, caring for the whole child, and boosting student achievement. The event includes more than 120 workshops on subjects such as college and career readiness, community engagement, campus safety, community schools, teacher retention, school funding, education policy, developing legislation, California’s new accountability measures, the importance of equity and adequacy to student achievement, and a variety of other topics.

Dr. Scorza will be presenting at a workshop entitled “Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline,” along with fellow presenters Forward Change Consulting Co-Founder Arnold Chandler, and Social Justice Learning Institute BLOOMer LeQuan Muhammad. The session taking place http://airmail.calendar/2016-12-01%2008:30:00%20PST in Moscone West Room 2008, will explore the impact of a community based initiative focused on creating alternative career and educational pathways for boys and men of color who are currently, or were previously, on probation. Participants will learn about how to facilitate academic achievement and school completion among these young men, and how to address adverse childhood experiences and trauma.

“Educating boys and young men of color requires additional attention and resources in our state. I am honored to share my experience in creating and implementing programs that have changed the paths for many students in Inglewood. I’m looking forward to connecting with fellow school board members from across California to discuss a range of topics, including interrupting the School to Prison pipeline,” Dr. Scorza stated.

In an era when California is changing the way it funds, supports, assesses and seeks to improve schools and when questions around equity persist, CSBA’s annual conference provides attendees with information and strategies needed to implement solutions that enhance student outcomes.

“Good governance acts as a catalyst for all the other conditions that are integral to student success. In order to govern effectively, education leaders must be well-informed and prepared to use that knowledge,” said CSBA President Chris Ungar. “Our annual conference places a wealth of information at trustees’ fingertips, while allowing them to learn from globally recognized speakers and share lessons and best practices with their colleagues from around California.”

About Dr. D’Artagnan Scorza

Dr. D’Artagnan Scorza Ph.D. is serving in his first term on the Inglewood Unified School District Board of Education. Dr. Scorza has been driving change in Inglewood’s schools through increasing academic achievement and creating safe, clean, and healthy school facilities. In addition to his service on the School Board, Dr. Scorza is the Founder and Executive Director of the Social Justice Learning Institute, a non-profit organization that works to help Inglewood and surrounding communities achieve health and educational equity. He also developed the Urban Scholars program to provide young men of color with opportunities for academic support, personal growth, college guidance, and jobs. The program is available in seven schools, including Inglewood Unified. Among the students who have completed the program, 95% have graduated from high school and 85% were accepted to college.
