Compton- Compton Mayor Aja Brown will be recognized for her efforts to address crime and violence in the city and bring jobs to the city’s residents. The JFK Library Foundation honors two individuals annually, under 40, who are committed to public service in their communities.

The foundation said the awards are “presented annually to two exceptional individuals whose contributions in elective office, community service, or advocacy demonstrate the impact and the value of public service in the spirit of John F. Kennedy.”
Welcoming new businesses to the city,UPS and Wal-Mart, negotiations included ensuring 1,000 new jobs were set aside for Compton residents.

Mayor Brown brought My Brother’s Keeper to the city along with creating partnerships with the school district, faith leaders and local nonprofits, to provide opportunities to the boys and men of color in the city, in an effort to curb violence. The city also became apart of the Violence Prevention Network, comprised of a federal task force, that also assisted with reducing crime in the nine square mile city.
Aja Brown, the mayor of Compton, Calif., has worked extensively to address violence and crime and to increase jobs in the city, the foundation said. She became the youngest mayor of Compton in 2013 at the age of 31.
This annoucement comes on the heels of the city’s deputy city trearurer being arrested for embezzlement and a possible FBI assisted investigation.
Mayor Brown is up for re-election in April 2017.
