2016 has to be one of the best election cycles this past decade. Voters are more aware and engaged on some issues thanks to social media and other non traditional outlets, like this blog. Mainstream media still plays a pivotal role in ensuring voters are up on the latest campaign news. In a recent Daily Breeze article, author Sandy Mazza delves into the battle to replace Janice Hahn, between political rivals Nanette Barragan and Senator Isadore Hall. The latest involves yet another perceived negative slur about the sitting Senator, which prompted support from around the district.

“I am shocked and appalled at the racially charged language and tactics employed by Nanette Barragan in her campaign for Congress against a wonderful and distinguished public servant, Isadore Hall. When I saw her quote in the newspaper referring to Isadore as a “black taint,” I was, in a word, speechless. Then I saw how she artificially darkened his image in her campaign mailers, and I knew this was no mistake. This is a pattern. As such, she has proven herself to be totally unfit to serve in the U.S. Congress. We’ve come too far and fought too hard to let politicians like Barragan and Donald Trump debase our public discourse in this manner. Words have meaning. Words have power. Words have consequences. And I sincerely hope Ms. Barragan pays dearly for her disgusting words and actions on election day.”
–Alice Huffman, California NAACP President
“Isadore Hall has always stood above racial divisions and stood up for equality. His opponent is wrong. We deserve better. We should have Isadore Hall in Congress.”
–Arturo Rodriguez, United Farm Workers President
“Nanette Barragan needs to dial back her racially insensitive political rhetoric. Maybe that’s the way they talk on Wall Street, but it’s not the way we talk to our brothers and sisters here in Los Angeles. Our children are watching. We need Isadore Hall in Congress. He’ll stand up for all of us.”
–Jorge Morales, South Gate City Councilman
“Nanette Barragan’s campaign tactics and public statements have no place in our community and no place in America. She doesn’t speak for the Latino community and she certainly doesn’t speak for me. I am proud to endorse Senator Isadore Hall. He has fought to bring our diverse communities together- not tear them apart.”
–Felipe Placencia, President Mexican American Bar Association, PAC
“I have worked hard to build coalitions across ethnic lines in LA County for decades. Isadore Hall has sought to do the same–that’s why my union endorsed him for Congress. I am very disappointed at the racially insensitive language used by Nanette Baragan. She should stop and apologize. We can’t stand by and be silent.”
–Maria Elena Durazo, UNITE HERE International Vice President
