Compton city manager Roger Haley has his hands full getting the cities financial affairs in order. This week’s April 26th council agenda reveals the city overestimated revenues and referenced “erroneous” information in the 2015-16 budget. Revenue was overinflated by millions. Many recall the city controller mysteriously resigning a couple of weeks ago. The city is preparing to appoint someone to the position at this same meeting. Items of concern are a pending million dollar payment to the Department of Finance.
Minutes from the April 19th include residents not being too happy about another developer being awarded the forgiveness of a loan.
A congressional candidate appeared at the meeting, to speak on Agenda Item 7 and was admonished by both the mayor and a council member. The item didn’t receive council approval.
The city manager is proposing key departments be moved from under the city attorney, Craig Cornwell, to the city managers office. Sounds like its time for a new city attorney. Any suggestions?

Workers comp is not handled by a manager yet attorney.
Risk MGMT if you are unfamiliar with specific laws and codes…
Code enforcement agains laws… How would you know if you need to push for pressing charges….
This has Scam all over it… I refuse to let this happen to my people…
Sounds like they are trying to wipe Craig out because he is doing his job and they are slowly getting caught.
Sheesh can you all take this mess to a city that can afford it… Bad enought we lost the Brickyard to the County bringing no money to Compton, but you want to take the few pennies we were able to scrap up!
That budget looks a hot mess. Misdirected money for sure….
And what exactly is the perceived issue with the CM’s report and recommendation? The last time I read something so detailed with clearly stated problem/resolution recommendations was about three CM’s ago, and then they fired him. Maybe it’s not the Mayor, maybe it’s the members of council who need review. If you can’t comprehend simple math and accounting why are you making decisions for the rest of us? Seriously…it’s explained clearly. It’s a plan of action, but I guess if it has the Mayor’s endorsement, immediately attacked as unsound in the eyes of comments I’m reading. So I read it first word to last, again. It still made sense, so what’s the real problem here? I’m just not getting it, I guess. I must be pretty stupid in light of all of the pundits who just seem to know better. I defer to you, then. And good luck with that reasoning. Sort of like that Life Cereal commercial. “Mikey Likes it and he hates everything!!” Yet it was hard getting Mikey to try even a spoon full of the tasty treat. New things, changes often scare those who want the “good ole days”. Sort of like Trump supporters. Rebels without a cause, but they hate everything from the upper office. No matter if they have an improved idea or not. And here we go…circling the proverbial drain, but not down it quite yet, thankfully. I’m sure Mr. Haley anticipated the push back when he came out of retirement to take this lousy job anyway. Did you think on that one. He doesn’t have to be here, but if you have someone better qualified, let’s hear it. If not…what’s your plan? Why do I hear the sounds of crickets chirping in the night. We have serious trust issues, I see. I don’t know the players personally enough to judge. But been here a very long time, hoping we’d eventually get things sorted and move forward. In some areas we are, but I don’t have access (yet) to interview sources directly, so I’ve offended enough people with my musings and opinions on such matters, including my councilwoman, to whom I’ve tried to apologize in person. Leave it at that. I’m not as qualified as many of you to offer suggestions here, other than using a little bit, only a little bit (because it’s all I have) of common sense and reasoning ability. seems being kind and fair in this arena will get you eaten alive, or castigated soundly. NYT’s is a better discussion experience because at least discussions seem more well thought out, rather than a bit personal and emotional. Everyone gets it wrong, fact of life. When’s the last time any of us walked on water? I never have, an unless Jesus beckons me from my boat, telling me to “Come..” guess it’s not in my future. So being just a human, warts and all, I post with sincerity, hoping against hope, that we’ll find daylight in the midst of controversy. Which is politics in it’s essence. Direct action and planning for unforeseen circumstances, appeals a bit more to my temperament. Guess I’m stupid, like I said. So please, continue. Educate me…
WHY WOULD YOU MOVE A DEPT LIKE CODE ENFORCEMENT FROM UNDER THE CITY ATTORNEY, WHEN THE CITY MANAGER DONT WRITE LAWS, NOR KNOW HOW TO ENFORCE THEM. IF YOU RESEARCH THIS CITY MANAGER FROM LYNWOOD HE TRIED THE SAME THING THERE AND IT FAILED GIVING HIMSELF TOTAL POWER OVER ANY AND EVERYTHING. TRYING TO STRIP THE CITY ATTORNEY. NOW IS THE TIME THIS CITY ATTORNEY STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR WHAT RIGHT OR MAYBE WE DO NEED A NEW ONE. THIS IS ALL POLITICAL NOT A CASE OF RESTRUCTURE. MAYBE YOU LADIES SHOULD TRY AND CONTACT THE ATTORNEY FOR A STATEMENT FOR THE PEOPLE.NOT JUST CITY DEPT BUT FOR THE CITIZENS AND PROTECT THEM AND THE CITIES ASSETS.
No we don’t need a new city attorney. It’s a case of I can’t control a debt that is under a elected officials. Not because something is wrong it’s because I am not in control. That dept. Is function better under the city attorney then they ever did. This is a much bigger picture pay close attention and u will see it develop as clear as day. It has to do with next year’s election
It is really ridiculous what these people are trying to do. Giving the city manager all of this power is so dangerous. Also, I really question some of those numbers. Everyone knows that the contract for Animal Control as been $450,000 for several years and for the numbers not to jive would not make sense.
It’s on record for the contract for animal control. It has been an issue about overtime in the Fire Department, because the lack of proper staffing. If those elected officials would read and investigate, they would be aware. But don’t tell me the budget was balanced when I told you it wasn’t!
i have a source that works in lynwood for 20 years that called me after last week council meeting and stated our city manager found a massive amount of hidden money and he was told if he said anything about it at any time he would be fired and blamed for hiding the money. just as the city clerk put it out there this city manager told her he did not want to move any dept but he is being made too. he dont want code enforcement under him they are where they should be they enforce the laws that the city attorney draft and the council make into laws. my source states our city manager is loyal to Mr Hall not the council they are frat brothers. that is why he is being quiet. but he doesn’t want too. if the first dist want a Compton paper why not urban girls news paper for our city tell the good the bad and the ugly as long as its all truth.
