City of Inglewood Mayor James Butts was pleased to announce Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) has a new state appointed trustee. The email also alluded to the departure of Dr. Don Brann, with mention of another trustee serving in the interim, until the new trustee assumes the position October 19th. This new trustee makes the 5th appointed by State Superintendent Tom Torlakson since IUSD was taken over by the state in September 2012.
A Bay Area native, Dr. Vincent Matthews has served the 33,000 students of San José Unified School District (SJUSD) as Superintendent since 2010. Prior to this, Dr. Matthews was tapped to lead Oakland Unified School District as the State Administrator. Under his leadership as state-appointed administrator, authority was returned to the Oakland Unified governing board. Dr. Matthews also dedicated several years of service to learning communities in Southern California as an area superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, the second largest district in California with 134,000 students.
Prior to that role, Dr. Matthews served as the educator in residence for the NewSchools Venture Fund, a venture philanthropy firm working to transform public education through powerful ideas and passionate entrepreneurs. Before joining NewSchools Venture Fund, Dr. Matthews served as the California operations vice president for Edison Schools, where he managed the overall operations for the eight Edison schools throughout California. A career educator, Dr. Matthews began his career in the classroom as teacher and local school administrator. He taught for several years at George Washington Carver School in San Francisco, and served in various administrative positions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area including principal of John Muir Middle School in San Leandro, principal of Edison Charter Academy in San Francisco, assistant principal of Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley and principal of Alvarado Elementary School in San Francisco.
Loyal to the Bay Area, Dr. Vincent Matthews earned his entire education at San Francisco State University. He holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Educational Administration, and a B.A. in Liberal Studies. Dr. Matthews also is a graduate of the Broad Superintendent’s Academy class of 2006.
