The City of Hawthorne has taken center stage on local newspaper, the Daily Breeze. With recent developments over the city’s finances, Sandy Mazza, has attempted to smear the name of Mayor Chris Brown, as he prepares to launch his campaign for re-election. Finance Director Rickey Manbahal has broken his silence to Ari Noonan of The Front Page Online about what is really going on with the finances of the City of Hawthorne. It is critical to note that the former mayor’s, prior to Mayor Brown, have both been charged with felonies as well as a former councilman. Ms. Mazza has also omitted critical information in her weekly diatribes, in regards to the history of how the city’s finances have been handled.

An important segment of the backstory to this flareup that apparently began with the newspaper is that Hawthorne, double the size of Culver City, went without a finance director for seven years. Bookkeeping, it has been implied, occasionally tended to be casual.
It appears these issues have been ongoing and occurring before the current mayor joined the dais. Council members Olivia Valentine and Angie Reyes-English were both on council when the city lacked a finance director, so how can the Daily Breeze place this entire mess on the current mayor?
