Disagreeing with then Cuban President Fulgencio Batista’s allowing the United States (U.S.) to dominate the Cuban economy, the Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro‘s 26th of July Movement and its allies against Batista’s government. After nearly six years of fighting, rebels finally ousted Batista on January 1, 1959.

The Movement organization would transition from socialist to becoming the Communist Party in October 1965. In spite of severe economic sanctions handed down by the U.S. the tiny island has had to rely on its neighbors, most notably the late Hugo Chavez, for support. With the Obama Administration now agreeing to new terms, I wondered how Fidel took the news.
I, myself, are skeptical of the renewed discussions to “befriend” Cuba and allow an easement of sanctions. I wondered if this were a ploy to gain access to the many U.S. political prisoners, who have found refuge, on the island. Most notably, JoAnne Chesimard aka Assata Shakur.
