Inglewood’s Academy Cathedral Church, in conjunction with Inglewood Unified School District advisory board member Carol Raines-Brown, held a Back 2 School “Priority Check” College Readiness & Career Day on October 19th. The program was designed to assist students with college applicants. Noticeably absent were representatives from local community colleges El Camino and LA Southwest.
Invited guests were heard from featured speaker IUSD State Superintendent Dr. Don Brann, City of Inglewood mayor James T. Butts Jr. and a host of IUSD upper management.
This was a college expo with principals attending from Inglewood High School and City Honors but NOT the Morningside High School principal Dr. Reginald Sirls? Did his school even know about this event? The district is still reeling from the severed partnership between IUSD and El Camino College.
Carol Raines-Brown looks tired both literally and figuratively. She has yet to update her bio on the churches website to reflect more accurately that she is NO LONGER a governing board member on the IUSD school board. She is a mere spectator like the rest of us.
The Academy Cathedral Church has a long history with former mayor Roosevelt Durn who has bestowed honors on the resident pastors. Back in April 2009, Academy Cathedral Church invoices appeared on the City of Inglewood council agenda but were pulled from the public and taken to closed session in conjunction with the Redevelopment Agency.
Update 1/22/2015
Inglewood Unified staff and faculty are in an uproar. Within the last week, long time board member Carol Raines-Brown, quietly stepped down from her advisory board seat number 4. Simultaneously, three new board members were appointed.
Coincidentally, a new position posted to EdJoin advertising for a position titled “Special Assistant to the State Trustee”. The only qualifications needed are a bachelor’s degree and five years experience working in the community which includes a school district and/or nonprofit.
This author’s email/phone was ringing off the hook with speculation as to who was this position for. It was revealed at last night’s board meeting that Carol Raines-Brown is up for consideration. She still lists she is a board member on her LinkedIn profile, which is not true.
This question becomes, what will she do to help the district, at the tune of $125k per year, that she wasn’t able to accomplish as a voting board member? Oh, that’s right. We are under state conservatorship as a direct result.
The public gave Dr. Brann the business at the meeting and the item was ultimately pulled. Dr. Brann is slippery. He schedules special meetings on a whim. Be on the lookout.
