Why is Compton the only contract city with a permanent contract with the LA County Sheriff’s

The LA County Sheriff’s provides law enforcement services to forty (40) cities out of eighty-eight (88) cities, within the LA County borders.  Of those cities, Compton is the only vendor who placed a measure on the ballot to secure the presence of the Sheriff’s until someone comes forward and places it on the ballot to return to extending the contract every five years.  Ironically, Compton is also a member of the Independent Cities Association (ICA).  Now how does Compton have membership in the ICA when criteria states you have to provide your OWN police AND fire services when Compton has the COUNTY providing BOTH?

Why would former city clerk, Charles Davis write such a measure, considering the many instances of racial profiling within the Sheriff’s department?  From former 2nd in command Paul Tanaka and his federally recognized neo-Nazi tattoo and also Mayor of Gardena (you ever ran into Gardena PD?  Didn’t they shoot an unarmed man recently over a bike?), the recent federal lawsuit which forces the Sheriff to compensate Antelope Valley residents for routine harassment, why would he want to put his fellow residents in such a position?

Was this due to the high number of individuals settling in Compton with realignment?  Why would someone take money from their own pocket and spend their time fighting in court to get the measure passed?  What’s in it for Davis?  Who really funded this measure?

I prefer to have my own. if a sheriff deputy commit a crime against our citizen as they have been. they are moved to a far away city and we are lied to and told that deputy was disciplined. with your own you know he or she was, no where to run no where to hide

  3. One correction – Compton does have it’s own fire department, it was the Police Department that was disbanded under Omar Bradley’s term that was replaced by the LASD. As a Compton resident since ’99, I prefer them to the former Compton P.D.

The requirement is to have your own fire and police departments to maintain membership in the Independent Cities Association. Compton has its own firefighters but not police officers. ICA must be hard up for membership fees to let Compton remain.
