This and That: Supreme Court gets case on campaign donation limits

untitledHere’s what is and isn’t making headlines in today’s edition of This and That.

Trash Free Lunch Program (TFL).  Seven South Bay schools have agreed to join a program to cut their lunchtime trash by 70 percent.  Sponsored by the Sanitation Districts of L.A. County and created by the environmental nonprofit Grades of Green, TFL is a contest that rewards schools for reducing lunchtime trash.  Unfortunately no schools in the Inglewood Unified School District are participating.

Recalling Governor Gray Davis.  Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the CA recall of former Governor, Gray Davis.  Do you think he would have signed a transgender bill allowing kids to use whatever bathroom they want?  Arnold campaigned on wanting to increase after school programs, and went to work cutting the funding.  Ask yourself, did we make a wise decision?  Are we better/worse as a result?

LAUSD firing teachers?  The Los Angeles Unified school board has voted to fire 127 educators and accepted the resignations of 110 more since February 2012, when the Miramonte sex-abuse scandal triggered a crackdown on misconduct, according to district officials.  What’s going to happen to the Crenshaw High teacher recently pulled from class for making sex related comments?

Supreme Court back in session.  The most important case on the SC’s docket is McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission which challenges the amounts an individual may give to candidates, political parties and political action committees in a two-year federal election cycle, currently $48,600 to candidates and $123,600 in total. The $2,600 limit on contributions to a candidate is not at issue.  Read the full list of cases on the docket here.
