The evolution of Omar Bradley

Tomorrow, April 25th, is a crucial day for City of Compton residents.  Omar Bradley’s retrial starts at 8am and final absentee ballot counting begins at 11am.  It is important to remember the positive attributes he brings to the table for the residents of the City of Compton if he is indeed certified for the runoff on June 11th.  The key qualities that he holds are humility, eloquence and loyalty.  This is a man who I have had the opportunity to study since Compton became front page news in the Metro section of the LA Times back in the 90’s.

The images that came to mind when I read about Compton where horrific.  I was scared shitless to go to Compton because of what I read about the city.  I too, at one time, was a sheep.  A slave to the media’s classification of him.  As time went on, he made a significant change, the removal of the Compton PD.  Not only was the local police disbanded, so was the Bradley administration.

Having read his book, The King of Compton, it presented another side of the man who I wasn’t reading about in the mainstream press.  He was educated, a teacher, coach and overall misunderstood because of his connections to the street.  He, like many of his neighbors, lost a family member to violence, in the streets of Compton.  He understands the lure of gang banging and dope dealing which leads to mass incarceration of people of color.  He too has served prison time receiving “three hots and a cot” and sat listening to hours of the plight of the fellow inmates.  He has been to the top, stumbled to the bottom and like many, he is a phoenix rising from the ashes.  Wiser.  Calmer.  Focused.  Determined.  Determined to bring opportunity to those who would otherwise be discarded by society.

Eric Perrodin

Eric Perrodin

The current mayor, Eric Perrodin is also a lifelong Compton resident, who has never once been referred to as the ‘gangster mayor’.  Perrodin is also familiar with the gangs in the community as a former Parks and Recreation employee as well as a member of the Gang Unit of the Compton PD.

Fast forward to 2006 when I purchased my first home.  The image of Compton was changing.  Crime was down and for all intents and purposes, I wasn’t as scared of the city.  My family grew up on Caldwell and Dwight, and many still live in the city today.  I vividly remember moving in and driving past a tore up piece of property located at the entrance to Compton off the 91 at Alameda.  I watched Gateway Towne Center be built and to date, only one store has closed, a shoe store that couldn’t hold on until the rest of the stores entered.  Compton reminds you of the south.  They all grew up together, played sports together, attended either Compton or Centennial High, skated at the skating rink.  All remnants of the good old days when Compton was a city for families.
Both men have made significant contributions to the city, in their own way, however, with Bradley now back in the race, it is clear these two young men, who once would have epic confrontations, are now more mellow and subdued this go round.  By his own admission, Bradley has a clearer vision of what he needs to do this time in order to get Compton back on track and he will not employ the tactic of tearing down his biggest foe, Eric Perrodin.  When recently speaking of Perrodin, he spoke like a protective cousin.  One who wouldn’t let an outsider bash him for the services he has provided to the city the past 20+ years.  Who would have thought the day would come when Omar Bradley spoke positively of Eric Perrodin?  It’s that loyalty to his fellow comrade who is fighting the good fight in the best interest of the residents.  In the words of Lillie Dobson, “praise God”!

Bradley has a pending case and is running does anyone see the problem with this ? It does not take a genius to figure out that this is Marion Berry like.

Marion Barry was not accused of misappropriation of public funds. He was given an opportunity to become mayor and the people voted him back in.

Senator Roderick Wright has been indicted on voter fraud AND perjury, and is still roaming the streets and endorsing candidates. His trial starts in July. He will only be removed IF convicted.

Seeing that Omar’s case was vacated, it is off the record as if it never happened. Pending charges are that, pending. Tomorrow we will be a big day for Compton. Final ballot count and conclusion of Omar’s trial.

Marion Berry “Like” not identical Bradley does not have the substantance abuse issues. Perrodin will advance tomorrow for the runoff and a forth term, WATCH. See any similar qualities ?

As Mayor of Washington, D.C. from 1979- 1991, he appointed unqualified and corrupt cronies to key positions, many of whom, under his watch, either embezzled government funds or otherwise lined their own pockets. Barry set the standard by spending lavishly on his own travel and amenities while keeping the actual expenditures secret. His multiple infidelities to his wife and abuse of cocaine and alcohol was widely publicized. He hired loyal supporters for jobs they either could not or did not do, swelling the D.C. budget. Wards that did not vote his way when he came up for election didn’t get their streets plowed. Contracts were awarded to Barry’s political connections rather than by such quaint criteria as cost-effectiveness and demonstrated ability to perform. Each year of his tenure, the budget deficit got worse, and Barry’s addictions got worse. Finally, he was caught on camera smoking crack, arrested, and forced to resign. The accumulated charges against him, including more than one drug possession charge and multiple counts of perjury still didn’t stick, because Barry Squad jurors hung the jury with absurd claims that the mayor was the victim of a “racist conspiracy.”

I have watched for 20 years our city be run be run by Omar and Eric that only worked for $ them, brothers, cousins, nephews while the rest of us stand by and suffer. Omar and Eric did some good but I’m tired of my city looking crazy. I am embarrassed when the paper refers to our mayor as the gangster mayor or that kcet story. Enough is enough Omar and Eric are tired and I ain’t sold on Aja Brown either. Can we have a real leader stand up PLEASE.

My experience with dealing with Perrodin is: He only help himself, family and friends. He along with others drove the City of Compton straight into hell. I can not think of anything that he has done positive and I hope that once this investigation is completed, that the guilty people will get what’s coming to them.

My personal opt-ANYONE WHO DOES NOT LIVE IN THE CITY, SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN FOR ANY POSITION. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO LIVE WITH US, NOT SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO TAKE MONEY FROM US AND THAT GOES FOR ANYONE RUNNIING FOR ANY POSITION AND THEIR COUNTERPARTS. YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES NEED TO FEEL WHAT WE FEEL, CRY WHEN WE CRY, OR SIMPLE JUST RUN FOR ANYTHING YOU WANT IN THE CITY YOU LIVE.
