Monroe Magnet Middle School Takes Top Honors in Science Competition

MonroeA team of Monroe Magnet Middle School students brought home a win at the 36th Annual Robert H. Herndon Memorial Science Competition on April 18, 2013.  Eighth-graders Ana Alba (Team Captain), Sarah Ceja (Co-Captain), Giovanni Miranda and Jamari Ducre won First Place in the Experimental Category – Middle School Division, with The Solar Cell Project, testing the reliability and cost-effectiveness of fixed solar panel system compared to a movable solar panel with sun tracking mechanism.

The students won a cash prize of $600 each, besting teams from Manhattan Beach, Tustin, Los Angeles, Hawthorne and Inglewood.

The Solar Cell Project’s advisors were Dr. John Mason, Engineer Gene Suova and Mrs. Maria Lyn Genota.

The students are part of A World in Motion (AWIM), a program of the Society of Automotive Engineers. SEA members Dr. John Mason, Engr. Dan Matulich, Engr. Walt Hendrickson, Engr. Rich Johannesen and Engr. Dick Smisek, have collaborated with Mrs. Genota of Monroe Middle School for five years in the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Program at Monroe Magnet Middle School in the Inglewood Unified School District.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Genota, the students wrote the technical report, created the academic display, and rehearsed the oral presentation. According to the students, their hard work has paid off because they were awarded a gold medal and a cash prize. Students also enjoyed tours of the Aerospace facilities, as well as keynote speaker and an award ceremony.

The Inglewood Unified School District is comprised of 22 schools. Combined locations educate roughly 12,000 students. The Inglewood Unified School District services the entire city of Inglewood and is home to six California Distinguished Schools and one National Blue Ribbon School.
