KRRL continues to dominate urban radio

big boyReal 92.3 (KRRL) continues to dominate urban radio markets.  Since revamping their format and bringing on Big Boy, ratings show they are destined to remain the #1 station in the #2 radio market.  The Los Angeles market boasts nearly 12 million listeners.  Data shows Latino’s make up a lucrative portion of the listeners with African-Americans a distant second.  KRRL remains atop established urban stations, KJLH and KDAY.  Meruelo Media, owner of KDAY, was recently awarded top awards for their Latin station Canal 22’s news programming.

Canal 22’s news team and the Los Angeles flagship affiliate of the MundoFOX television network, has been awarded and recognized with six Telly Awards for their News campaign “La Voz de Tu Ciudad” (the Voice of Your City).

“The Meruelo Media team is extremely honored to receive such prestigious recognition by the Telly Awards academy,” stated Otto Padron, President of Meruelo Media. “This is a tribute to high quality teamwork, and the multiple honors illustrate Meruelo Media Studio’s creativity, skill and dedication to their craft, talent and potential.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed Mr. Padron as a commissioner to the Board of the Los Angeles Convention Center last year.

Meruelo Media has made significant changes at KDAY with the hopes of increasing ratings and market share.  They have added an African-American DJ, Travon Smith, into the Sunday rotation from 12pm to 4pm.  Smith also hosts the “Community Show” which airs Sunday’s at 6am.

The half hour KDAY community show continues to be pre-recorded and not provide opportunity for the community to call in on hot topics.  With the recent awards for Canal 22’s news programming, perhaps this will compel the owners to consider going in the same direction on their radio channel.  KDAY has also added the insanely popular Art Laboe, to the Sunday lineup from 6pm to midnight.
