Kent Taylor rebounds in Lennox as (Interim) Deputy Superintendent

The Lennox School District is undergoing a top-heavy round of layoffs that will eliminate at least 20 managers and specialists, as well as demote the district’s three assistant superintendents, whose salaries are slated for a slashing.  Surprisingly, former Inglewood USD state administrator, Kent Taylor, was hired last week as deputy superintendent.

Meanwhile, although the Lennox district has issued layoff notices to 22 teachers, new Superintendent Barbara Flores anticipates that the true number of cutbacks within their ranks will ultimately be zero.

As for the cuts, they call for the elimination of four coordinator positions and  16 staff development specialists – saving about $90,000 each – as well as two director positions, saving $115,000 each. They also call for the demotion of three assistant superintendents to director positions. The salaries of these employees – Luis Camarena in human resources, Jose Dominguez in facilities and Joann Isken in instructional services – will shrink from $141,000 to $115,000

Tuesday’s late-night retrenchments stand in stark contrast to last year’s round of cutbacks, which were heavily concentrated on the teacher ranks. Last year’s cuts, made by the prior administration, involved issuing layoff notices to 100 of the district’s 340 teachers, and infuriated the teachers union by making an end run around the “last-hired, first-fired” seniority laws.

In another noteworthy development, the district has hired, as its No. 2 in command, Kent Taylor, the man who was hand-picked by California’s superintendent of public instruction, Tom Torlakson, to lead the bankrupt Inglewood Unified out of its financial quagmire. Two months later, Taylor was pressured to resign after undermining Torlakson’s authority by entering into unauthorized negotiations with the teachers union. Hired last week, Taylor is serving as the district’s deputy superintendent on an interim basis, officials said.
