Consultants: Do I Need One???

When deciding to begin your new business venture, deciding to work with someone can put you in a quandary.  Ideally, you want to work with someone in a similar industry as you, however, most consultants are versed in starting business, regardless of the industry you are entering.  ALL businesses require the same legal foundation, however, you don’t want to reinvent the wheel and waste unnecessary time and efforts.   They will be your guiding light so to speak, so when deciding to work with someone, keep a few things in mind:

  1. NEVER have unrealistic expectations consultants aren’t miracle workers, our job is to guide you;
  2. ALWAYS communicate your needs in WRITTEN form if you can’t articulate what you want, how can we give it to you;
  3. NEVER do business with someone you don’t feel comfortable with this is a no brainer;
  4. NEVER pay someone for your initial contact if they don’t offer a free consultation, keep it moving;
  5. ALWAYS have a budget that you are determined to stick with who wants the price to change every time we talk;
  6. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS GET IT IN WRITING– contracts are legally binding and are there to protect both parties so that roles and responsibilities are established and most importantly agreed upon.

Consultants normally have existing relationships with vendors they work with regularly, which translates to cost saving tips they can pass on to you, and saves you time in finding them.  More than likely they have created business and marketing plans for either themselves and/or past clients, which takes a lot of time in research and typing, so don’t balk at the amount folks charge for their time.  If you find it so unreasonable, then imagine writing a typical college research paper and multiply the number of pages by 10, 15 on the high end.  It also frees your time to do the most important component of getting your business up, finding funding sources.

Consultants are there to point you in the right direction and show you easy mistakes to avoid.  A good consultant will communicate effectively with you, will always follow-up conversations in written form and will ask you MANY questions in order to best serve YOU.  Remember its your money and you don’t want to waste it, so when in doubt, hire one, especially if the price is right!
