How were City of Los Angeles #PromiseZone’s designated

Former City of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and then Hollywood councilman Eric Garcetti, were ecstatic back in 2012. The Hollywood Patch reported that the Youth Policy Institute received millions, in federal grants, due in part to CM Eric Garcetti’s efforts.

The Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood (LAPN) grant awarded $30million, to be exact, based on a 2010 needs-assessment that found high rates of poverty, in cities where more than 50% of the cities residents were foreign born, lived in overcrowded homes and had not received a minimum of a high school diploma.

The goal of the LAPN grant is to provide education, job training and technology services to moderate- and low-income Angelenos.

YPI was one of seven organizations nationwide to receive the prestigious federal education grant worth $30 million.

By receiving the grant it would open the door to receive up to $600 million more from city, county, state and federal funding.
