Car Sharing company Car2go prepares to roll into the South Bay area

Daimler AG’s car sharing company, Car2go was introduced to the Redondo Beach City Council on November 6th with much enthusiasm.  Councilman Bill Brand states, “…I can’t see any City Council you present this to not approving it..”  Walter Rosenkranz, a Car2go representative says, “…Car2go is the first fully automated, one-way, open end, on the spot car sharing system”.

The Car2go system works where members join to have access and can pick up the car at a moments notice.  If the member sees a Car2go nearby, they can simply swipe their access card, get in and drive.   Car2go allows you to pickup and drop off anywhere in the proposed boundaries pre-designated by Car2go and the nine participating cities.  Car2go charges potential members a one-time registration fee of $35 (in other cities Car2go operates, the $35 registration fee converts to $35 driving credit) and rates are currently set at $0.38 per minute with an hourly max of approximately $15.  Car2go plans on placing 300 to 350 “smartfortwo” cars through the proposed nine-city service area.

The SBCCOG (South Bay Cities Council of Governments) was instrumental in brining the car sharing program to the cities attention after studying travel patterns in the South Bay for the last five years.  Last month the SBCCOG adopted the resolution endorsing Car2go, thus setting up the November 6th meeting with Redondo Beach.  In the coming months, Car2go will deliver presentations to all nine participating cities to hopefully have a program up and running in mid 2013.

Car2go would not operate exclusively in the cities, which will allow for other car sharing companies to bring their service to town.  Car2go is a nice alternative since the cars come in both gas and electric models.

The Car2go system will be available for travel anywhere in the state of California, you area only permitted to drop off in the proposed boundaries of the 105 freeway to the north and Western Bl. to the east.

Who are the lucky nine cities? They are: El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Lomita, Manahattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance.
