Things that make you go hmmm….

During the recent Inglewood municipal elections, there was growing concern of the involvement of former council members Judy Dunlap and Mike Stevens, alleged involvement in an upstart community newspaper called the Morningside Park ChronicleOnce the discussion went public, Judy Dunlap and her presumed ex husband Milton Brown, both ended their affiliation with the community newspaper.

Only Mike Stevens remained attached.

Why is this considered a conflict of interest?  Current vice-mayor of the City of Long Beach, Robert Garcia, co-owns the LB Post.  The editor posts articles on elected officials, with the moderator routinely bashing other elected officials, while heaping glorious reviews of Garcia in the comments sections.

Oh yeah, Robert Garcia is also running for mayor of the LBC.  Robert Garcia would officially step down from the day to day operations, according to this case study, he retained 25% ownership of the LB Post.

Why are the residents not pleased with Bonnie Lowenthal entering the mayoral race?

Inquiries to the former managing editor of the LB Post, Allison Jean Eaton, have not been returned as of press time, however, Councilman Robert Garcia did confirm to 2UrbanGirls he does still retain ownership in the news source.

Oh dear. I think you’ve really stepped in it this time! Your lack of knowledge of the LBC, LBC politics, the Lowenthals (plural – as in Alan, Bonnie, Dan, Josh and Suja) and the LB Post is glaringly apparent. If you’re going to write stuff like this, please try to make it look like you know your subject matter, take your time and write it well.

Better yet, stick closer to home and strive to give us here in Inglewood something that’s as well done as the LB Post so we can elect city officials that are as dedicated to improving Inglewood as Robert Garcia and others are dedicated to improving Long Beach. The Post does a better job covering the LBC than the Long Beach Press Telegram, The Long Beach Business Journal, Gazette Newspapers or the LA Times. We should be so lucky to have something like that here in Inglewood. Do you have any interest in putting something like that together on your website, or are you just doing this to lob grenades?

My comment was not approved. Possibly because I am the Executive Editor of the Long Beach Post questioning why I was not contacted for comment on this story.

Robert Garcia co-founded the LB Post long before he was elected to the Long Beach City Council. What does him co-founding the newspaper have to do with the good work he does in the City of Long Beach? You have so much to say about the way the community is ran, why don’t you step up to the plate, form a committee and run for office? You’re a ingewood resident, yet your school district is in receivership, just elected a new board and you didn’t even run….. Lets see you post a negative article about yourself on her Miss Never get the facts straight Minnie Mouse Journalist

Bob Garcia’s work history is clearly not the focus of the story. IUSD is in receivership, and unfortunately, we didn’t have a community media source reporting that to us. IUSD looks forward to coming out just as Compton Unified School District did.

You sound like a regular reader.

Here is a case study on the Long Beach Post. According to this case study, Garcia still has 25% ownership. Interesting story. Who knew it cost $16k to redesign a website.

  6. Morningside Park Chronicle says:

Next time, how about asking the publisher or the editor about accusations that could get you into some expensive litigation for libel.

We shunted Dunlap because of her flip-flop behavior at council meetings. Milton Brown simply stopped writing.

Moreover, Willie Brown’s paper is almost exclusively funded by Inglewood taxpayer funds. The city even pays for private ads for CDS/Republic a private company that has no fewer than two employees who are relatives of Inglewood council members, both of whom were hired after CDS/republic got their 10-year contract in late 2012.

Willie Brown is given carte blanche into employee-only areas in the city clerk and mayor’s office. he has been seen walking uninvited into these areas as well as going with the mayor, James T. Butts into the mayor’s office immediately after city council meetings.

So the next time you wish to make a comparison about politicos that own newspaper, please get your facts straight lest you receive a subpoena. Willie Brown has already been served for his libel, I will have you know.

    • UrbanGirl says:

I think you missed the point of the article. Trying to ascertain why there is a conflict of interest is the question. References re: MPC were made since that is the most recent instance of this issue arising.

I am not privy to how Willie Brown runs his paper, although, questions posed to Inglewood Today on certain articles they have published, have gone unanswered. I did not reach out to you because your responses are typically erratic. However, this blog has NO issues with the owners of the MPC, in spite of articles you have written about this blog and its editor. Everyone isn’t your enemy.
